Plot Twist in Millie's Hearing Journey (22 Months Old)

From Day 1, Millie's hearing journey has never been straight forward. As a newborn and before her hearing loss diagnosis, she underwent a lot of testing. At 11 weeks old, she was diagnosed with unilateral mild hearing loss. Since then, we have know that it was possible she might need a hearing aid for her other ear.

Millie continued to undergo a lot of testing this year. Her right ear was presenting hearing loss, but she was also experiencing fluid in her ear (the big question being was the fluid causing her hearing loss or was there fluid AND hearing loss). In August, it seemed like we received the best case scenario of results. ENT saw no fluid in her ear, and the on-call Audiology clinic showed normal hearing during the hearing test. I was really surprised about the results but was very happy - it was best case scenario!

Yesterday, Millie had an appointment with her audiologist. The plan was to make a new mold but we ended up doing more testing as well. The tests did not reveal normal hearing in her right ear. The tests revealed similar results to what her audiologist had been seeing over the past year (mild hearing loss in her right ear as well). She recommended that Millie be fitted for a hearing aid in her right ear. The hearing loss was going on long enough. It was time to do something about it.

I questioned why Millie showed normal hearing just a month prior. There were many factors that went into it, one being Millie outsmarted the test. The audiologists that performed the test were not familiar with her case and Millie is so smart.

Though I wasn't expecting to receive this diagnosis at yesterday's appointment, I feel so good about it. It's been a roller coaster of a journey but Millie receiving a second hearing aid has been a LONG time coming. It finally was the right time. So yesterday, for the first time, we made a mold for her right ear. She will be receiving her second hearing aid in October. I cannot wait for her to experience hearing in full force!

Millie, you are so smart!! I am so proud of you! I am so happy the time is right, and we are able to give you what you need! Keep being a dominant force, Millie Rose!! I love you so much!!
